Course Overview

In this course, you’ll identify, define, and refine your professional design narrative and begin, if you haven’t already, to engage with prospective employers and partners.

Outcomes and Competencies

In this course, you will start by defining and refining your personal narrative, then apply visual design principles to your work in order to create a clear and cohesive personal brand as a designer.

Develop Your voice

  • Be able to tell the story of your body of work and how it relates to you as a person and highlight your strengths to potential clients and/or employers.

Produce + Publish

  • Be able to (begin to) reflect on the work you have done and this journey you’ve taken together.

  • Create an MVP Portfolio: One-pager of profile and case studies

  • Update your resume to match your brand

  • Create a holistic portfolio of touch points: be able to illustrate your POV and body of work across different mediums with unique requirements.

  • Begin to apply and interview for work.

Deepen Industry Understanding + Gather Inputs

  • Increase familiarity with the creative industry, how design is being practiced and applied, subtle changes or evolutions in this space, and nascent opportunities.

  • Deepen understanding of audience and values in prospective practice areas.

  • Understand modern hiring practices and be able to prepare and perform well in order to achieve your goals.

Course Schedule

Week 1

Class 1: Hey, Hi

  • Intros, review syllabus. Workshop to surface goals, fears, expectations

Class 2: Who am I and what story am I telling?

  • Workshop on personal narrative and storytelling

Week 2

Class 3: Personal Statement & Personal Design Principles

  • Craft personal statement

  • Define personal design principles

  • Discuss resumes + 1-page portfolios (MVP)

  • Assignment: Update resume to reflect AC4D work, create 1-page portfolio [content-only]

Class 4: Share Out + Design Basics

  • Peer review of resumes and 1-pagers [content-only].

  • Lecture: Design Basics

Week 3

Class 5: Design Basics: Layout & Hierarchy

  • Lecture: Color, Layouts, Hierarchy, Style Guides, Design Systems

  • Assignment: Create 3 separate & distinct style guides. Apply them to your resume + 1-pager (6 deliverables)

Class 6: Working Session

  • Work on Assignment

Week 4

Class 7: Guest Critique, O.P.P.

  • Guest Critique on Resumes, 1-page Portfolio, Style Guide application.

  • Lecture: Other People’s Portfolios

  • Assignment: Choose 3 online interaction designer portfolios you like, bring screen shots to next class

Class 8: Personal Design Criteria

  • Workshop: Refine personal design criteria.

  • Assignment: Portfolio wireframe/hierarchy [content only]

Week 5

Class 9: Working Session

  • Work on Assignment

Class 10: Portfolio [content-only] Review

  • Guest critique: Portfolio content-only feedback

Week 6

Class 11: Working Session

  • Incorporate portfolio review feedback; start to apply your style guide to your online portfolio

  • Assignment: Portfolio [design + content]

Class 12: Working Session

  • Assignment: Portfolio [design + content]

Week 7

Class 13: Portfolio share out

  • Guest critique: Completed portfolio

Class 14: Interview Decks

  • Lecture: Interview decks; working session

  • Assignment: Find a job posting that sounds like a fit and pretend you have an interview for it. Make a deck for that interview

Week 8

Class 15: Mock Interviews

  • Mock interviews with Guest Interviewers

Class 16: Working Session/Celebrate!

  • Update and post all deliverables
